Glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) is a recombinant human protein that serves as the active ingredient in Diamyd®, a drug candidate developed by Diamyd Medical for the prevention and treatment of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). In T1D, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, and GAD65 is a major autoantigen targeted by these self-reactive T cells. The therapy aims to modulate the immune system, specifically by inducing immune tolerance to GAD65, thereby protecting the pancreatic beta cells and preserving endogenous insulin production. It is often formulated with alum (aluminum hydroxide) to enhance its immunomodulatory effects.
