It consists of standardized grass pollen allergens that have been chemically modified with glutaraldehyde to create 'allergoids.' This modification significantly reduces the allergen's IgE-binding capacity, thereby improving safety by lowering the risk of systemic allergic reactions, while preserving the T-cell epitopes necessary for inducing immune tolerance. The allergoids are adsorbed onto L-tyrosine, a naturally occurring amino acid that acts as a slow-release depot (adjuvant), allowing for a prolonged and controlled exposure of the immune system to the allergens. This technology, often referred to as Modified Cytokine-adsorbed Tyrosine (MCT), enables a shorter and more convenient dosing schedule compared to traditional unmodified allergen extracts. The primary developer of this formulation technology is Allergy Therapeutics, with significant clinical validation and research conducted by institutions such as the University of Foggia.
