Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glutarex is a **medical food** developed by Abbott Nutrition for the dietary management of **glutaric aciduria type I**. It is a lysine-free and tryptophan-free amino acid-modified oral powder designed to provide protein nutrition while minimizing the precursor amino acids that patients with glutaric aciduria type I cannot properly metabolize. The formulation includes essential and non-essential amino acids and added **L-carnitine** to support excretion of toxic metabolites. Glutarex is intended for use under medical supervision, with prescribed supplemental intact protein and fluids, and functions through metabolic and nutritional support rather than a conventional pharmacologic target-based mechanism.
