Overview
Lisathyone is a pharmaceutical formulation of glutathione sodium developed by Lisapharma. As a tripeptide (gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), glutathione is the most abundant endogenous antioxidant in human cells, playing a critical role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. The drug functions by directly scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals, thereby protecting cellular components from oxidative damage. Additionally, it serves as a vital cofactor for glutathione S-transferases (GST), facilitating the conjugation and subsequent detoxification of various electrophilic metabolites, including those generated by platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents. Lisathyone is primarily indicated as an antidote to prevent or reduce neurotoxicity associated with chemotherapy (such as cisplatin or oxaliplatin) and is also utilized for its hepatoprotective properties in the treatment of various liver disorders. It is typically administered via intravenous or intramuscular injection.
