Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is a family of enzymes with peroxidase activity whose primary biological role is to protect the organism from oxidative damage. It functions by catalyzing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water and their corresponding alcohols, respectively, using glutathione as a reducing agent. In the context of clinical research conducted by the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (specifically the GSH Study, NCT01149707), it was evaluated as an oral dietary supplement administered at a dose of 125 mg twice daily to healthy adults. The study aimed to determine the efficacy of glutathione-related supplementation on systemic glutathione levels and markers of oxidative stress. GPx is notable for often requiring selenium as a critical cofactor for its antioxidant enzymatic activity.
