Overview

Glutathione sodium is the sodium salt form of reduced glutathione (GSH), an endogenous tripeptide antioxidant composed of the amino acids glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. It functions as a major thiol-disulfide redox buffer in cells and serves as a powerful antioxidant capable of scavenging oxygen-derived free radicals. Glutathione participates in leukotriene synthesis, acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, and plays a crucial role in the hepatic biotransformation and detoxification processes. It's involved in the detoxification of methylglyoxal (a toxic byproduct of metabolism) through glyoxalase enzymes and can participate in both enzymatic and non-enzymatic conjugation with certain chemicals.
