Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glycerin 0.9% is a pharmaceutical formulation containing 0.9% (w/v) of the active ingredient glycerin (also known as glycerol or glycerine). Glycerin is a trihydroxy alcohol used in medicine primarily for its osmotic and lubricating properties. In ophthalmic preparations, such as artificial tears or lubricating eye drops, it acts as an ocular lubricant to relieve symptoms of dry eyes by retaining moisture on the ocular surface and protecting against irritation from environmental factors like wind or sun[3][8]. It may also be used to reduce intraocular pressure in conditions such as glaucoma due to its ability to create an osmotic gradient that draws fluid out of the eye[1][5]. When administered orally or rectally at higher concentrations, it serves as an osmotic laxative by drawing water into the intestines and stimulating bowel movements[2][4]. The mechanism of action in ophthalmic use is primarily physical lubrication and hydration; systemically, it works via osmosis.
