Glycerol OBA

Glycerol "OBA" is a rectal suppository formulation of glycerol being investigated by the University of Aarhus for the management of major Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS). LARS is a common complication following rectal cancer surgery, characterized by bowel dysfunction symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and fecal incontinence. Glycerol OBA acts as both an osmotic laxative and a local rectal stimulant; it draws water into the rectum to soften stool and irritates the rectal mucosa to trigger a defecation reflex. The formulation is intended to facilitate scheduled, initiated defecation to help patients regain control over their bowel movements. In clinical trials, it is being evaluated as a simpler and potentially more accessible alternative to transanal irrigation (TAI) systems.
