Glyceryl tribenzoate (GTB) is a small molecule compound primarily used as a flavoring agent and excipient in the food and pharmaceutical industries. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a flavoring ingredient in foods[3][5][7]. In addition to its established role as an additive with self-limiting properties due to rapid absorption and metabolic detoxication in humans and animals[3], recent research suggests that GTB may have pharmacological potential for inhibiting the pathogenesis of autoimmune and neurodegenerative disorders by suppressing proinflammatory molecules such as nitrite, TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha), and IL‑1β (interleukin‑1 beta), possibly through upregulation of regulatory T cells via increased transforming growth factor β (TGF‑β)[3]. Glyceryl tribenzoate has also been designated an orphan drug for Huntington’s disease[4].
