Overview

Glycididazole sodium, marketed under the brand name **Shimena**, is a nitroimidazole-based radiosensitizer developed by **Simcere Pharmaceutical**. It is specifically designed to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy in patients with solid tumors, particularly those containing hypoxic regions which are typically resistant to radiation. As a hypoxic cell sensitizer, glycididazole sodium mimics the action of oxygen by reacting with radiation-induced free radicals in tumor DNA, thereby 'fixing' the damage and preventing cellular repair mechanisms. This leads to increased tumor cell apoptosis and improved local control rates. Approved in China, it is commonly used in the treatment of esophageal cancer, head and neck cancers, and lung cancer in combination with standard radiotherapy regimens.
