Overview

Glycinamide is a small, water-soluble organic compound that is the amide derivative of the amino acid glycine. It serves as a crucial intermediate in the de novo purine biosynthesis pathway, where it is converted into glycineamide ribonucleotide. Beyond its metabolic role, Glycinamide has been investigated for its potential therapeutic applications, particularly as a pro-drug for glycine. Upon metabolic conversion to glycine in the brain, it can exert analgesic effects by acting as an inhibitory neurotransmitter through glycine receptors and as a co-agonist at NMDA receptors. Additionally, Glycinamide has been shown to inhibit the conversion of proparathyroid hormone to parathyroid hormone. Its hydrochloride salt is also utilized as a buffering agent in cell culture and as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various medicinal compounds.
