Glycine is the simplest and smallest amino acid, with a single hydrogen atom as its side chain. It is a non-essential amino acid found in proteins such as collagen, where it constitutes about 35% of the structure. Glycine acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, especially in the spinal cord, brainstem, and retina. It also serves as a co-agonist for NMDA receptors (excitatory) alongside glutamate. In metabolism, glycine is involved in biosynthesis of porphyrins and purines and plays a role in hepatic detoxification by conjugating with toxins to increase their solubility for excretion[1][2][5].
