Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Glycine max extract** is a herbal preparation obtained from the seeds (semen) or other parts (e.g., leaf or germ/hypocotyl) of the soybean, which is notable for its high content of phytoestrogenic isoflavones, mainly genistein, daidzein, and glycitein[1][4][5]. The dry extract is standardized to isoflavone content and is primarily used for the relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, feelings of nervous tension, and anxiety, after exclusion of serious pathology[1][5]. Isoflavones in Glycine max act as phytoestrogens, exerting estrogen receptor modulatory effects with anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anti-cancer properties[2][4][5]. There is evidence of additional metabolic effects including lowering LDL cholesterol, inhibition of cholesterol absorption, lowering blood pressure, and inhibition of platelet aggregation[5]. Glycine max extract is also investigated for skin health, as it may retard skin aging and improve epidermal function by preventing lipid oxidation, stimulating fibroblast activity, and reducing collagen degradation[4]. The mechanism of action is mainly thought to be estrogen receptor modulation via isoflavones, with secondary antioxidant and metabolic effects[1][4][5].
