Glycine nano-selenium (NS-Gly) is a nanoparticle formulation of the trace element selenium, functionalized or stabilized with the amino acid glycine to improve bioavailability and reduce toxicity compared to inorganic selenium salts. It acts primarily as a potent antioxidant by upregulating the activity of key enzymes, including glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), thereby mitigating oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. NS-Gly has been investigated for its potential as an immunomodulatory adjuvant to enhance vaccine responses (e.g., against H9N2 avian influenza) and as a neuroprotective agent in models of Parkinson's disease, where it helps preserve dopaminergic neurons. Additionally, it is studied as a nutritional supplement in poultry to support intestinal health and overall antioxidant capacity.
