Overview

Glycolate, specifically in the form of the stable isotope-labeled tracer **[1-13C]glycolate**, is used as a metabolic probe to investigate the glyoxylate/oxalate pathway. In clinical research conducted by **Academisch Medisch Centrum (Amsterdam UMC)**, it is administered via continuous primed intravenous infusion to quantify endogenous oxalate production in patients with **primary hyperoxaluria types 1 and 2**. Glycolate is a metabolic precursor to glyoxylate, which is subsequently converted to oxalate; in primary hyperoxaluria type 1, a deficiency in alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGT) leads to excessive oxalate synthesis from these precursors. This compound serves as a diagnostic and research tool rather than a therapeutic agent, allowing researchers to measure metabolic flux and investigate pyridoxine responsiveness.
