Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glycolic acid + vitamin B5 is a topical combination therapy used primarily in dermatology for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of acne, photoaging, and hyperpigmentation. Glycolic acid, the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), functions as a chemical exfoliant by reducing calcium ion concentration in the epidermis, which leads to the dissociation of desmosomes (intercellular adhesion structures) and subsequent shedding of the stratum corneum. This process promotes cellular turnover and stimulates collagen synthesis in the dermis. Vitamin B5, typically included in formulations as pantothenic acid or its provitamin form, panthenol, serves as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent. It acts as a precursor to coenzyme A, facilitating lipid synthesis and skin barrier repair. The inclusion of vitamin B5 helps to mitigate the potential irritation, erythema, and dryness often associated with high-concentration AHA exfoliation, providing a soothing effect and enhancing overall skin hydration.
