Overview

Glycopegylated erythropoietin (NE-180) is a long-acting recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) analog developed using proprietary GlycoPEGylation technology. This technology involves the site-specific, enzymatic attachment of polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers to the glycan chains of the erythropoietin protein using glycosyltransferase enzymes. By linking PEG to glycans remote from the protein's active site, the drug preserves its biological activity while significantly extending its circulating half-life and improving its pharmacokinetic profile compared to first-generation EPO products. It acts as an agonist of the erythropoietin receptor (EpoR), stimulating the production of red blood cells (erythropoiesis). The drug was primarily investigated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cancer chemotherapy, but development was halted following the liquidation of its developer, Neose Technologies.
