Overview

Glycoside 3b is an investigational small molecule belonging to a class of phenolic N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) glycosides. It was developed as a potential treatment for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by targeting α-glucosidase, an enzyme essential for the digestion of dietary carbohydrates. Glycoside 3b is synthesized by the glycosylation of phenolic compounds with NAG, a monosaccharide derived from the marine polysaccharide chitin. This modification is designed to enhance the compound's binding affinity and inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase compared to its parent phenolic structure. While its analogue, glycoside 3a, was identified as the most potent in the series, glycoside 3b represents a specific candidate within this marine-derived class of inhibitors currently in the preclinical research stage.
