Glycoursodeoxycholic acid (GUDCA) is a glycine-conjugated form of ursodeoxycholic acid. It is an endogenous bile acid metabolite with regulatory effects on bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota. Preclinical studies show that GUDCA supplementation improves metabolic profiles by decreasing blood glucose, ameliorating insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, and providing hepatoprotective and neuroprotective effects. Mechanistically, GUDCA has been shown to inhibit the intestinal FXR axis, modulate ER stress, suppress apoptosis, and alter the bile acid pool composition, suggesting a role in the management of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease[1][2][3][4][5].
