Overview

Glycyrrhizae decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation derived from the roots and rhizomes of *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (licorice). It was developed and clinically evaluated by the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine (formerly Henan College of TCM) for the treatment of recurrent oral ulcers in patients with HIV/AIDS. The decoction's therapeutic profile is driven by its primary active component, glycyrrhizic acid (glycyrrhizin), which acts as an antagonist of High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and an inhibitor of 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. These mechanisms contribute to potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, including the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and interleukins. By modulating the local immune environment and promoting mucosal repair, glycyrrhizae decoction helps reduce the pain, duration, and recurrence of oral lesions in immunocompromised individuals.
