Overview
Glycyron is an oral combination drug containing monoammonium glycyrrhizate (a salt of glycyrrhizic acid), glycine, and DL-methionine. Developed by onepharm Research & Development GmbH, it is primarily investigated for the treatment of gingivitis. Glycyrrhizic acid, a triterpenoid saponin extracted from licorice root (*Glycyrrhiza glabra*), exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD), which prevents the breakdown of cortisol. It also suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha, inhibits NF-κB nuclear translocation, and acts as an antioxidant. The addition of glycine and methionine is intended to mitigate potential side effects of glycyrrhizin, such as pseudoaldosteronism, and support hepatic function. The drug has been studied in Phase II clinical trials in Germany for adult patients with gingivitis.
