Overview

Glycyrrhizinate (also known as glycyrrhizin or glycyrrhizic acid) is a triterpenoid saponin compound extracted from the root of licorice (Glycyrrhiza species). It is widely used for its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, hepatoprotective, and immunomodulatory properties. Glycyrrhizinate exerts its effects by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and caspase 3, inhibiting the nuclear translocation of NF-κB, conjugating free radicals, and modulating immune cell proliferation via JNK, ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways. Its antiviral activity includes inhibition of viral replication across a broad spectrum of viruses. Clinically in China and other countries it is used primarily for liver diseases (such as hepatitis), inflammatory conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, allergic disorders, peptic ulcers and to protect against drug-induced liver injury[1][4][7][8].
