GM-CSF + entecavir is an experimental combination therapy being investigated by Beijing 302 Hospital (The Fifth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). This regimen combines the immunomodulatory effects of Granulocyte Macrophage-colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF), a biologic cytokine that stimulates the production and activity of macrophages and dendritic cells, with the potent antiviral activity of entecavir, a nucleoside analog that inhibits HBV DNA polymerase. The rationale behind this combination is to enhance the host's cellular immune response against the hepatitis B virus, potentially leading to higher rates of HBsAg seroconversion and functional cure compared to entecavir monotherapy. Clinical trials, such as NCT03164889, evaluate the efficacy of this combination in achieving HBsAg loss in CHB patients.
