Overview

GM-CSF-secreting cellular immunotherapy is a form of **cell-based cancer immunotherapy** in which autologous or allogeneic tumor cells are genetically modified to secrete granulocyte–macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and are then irradiated and injected into the patient. The secreted GM-CSF enhances the maturation, activation, and recruitment of dendritic cells and other antigen-presenting cells, which in turn prime T cells and initiate a strong anti-tumor immune response[1][3][4]. This platform has been investigated both as monotherapy and combined with stem cell transplantation, particularly under the name "GVAX," in a variety of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. The approach is under clinical investigation for multiple cancer types and has not achieved regulatory approval as a standard product, though specific implementations (e.g., GVAX, SV-BR-1-GM) exist as investigational therapies[3][7].
