Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-transduced autologous tumor cells are patient-derived tumor cells genetically modified to express and secrete GM-CSF, then irradiated and administered back as a personalized therapeutic cancer vaccine. The secreted GM-CSF recruits and activates dendritic cells and other antigen-presenting cells to the site of administration, thereby enhancing antigen presentation and stimulating a tumor-specific immune response. This approach aims to induce potent, durable anti-tumor immunity via immunostimulation, particularly for cancers such as melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and prostate cancer. Multiple phase I and II clinical trials have tested this strategy.
