Overview

GMDTC is a novel small molecule chelating agent developed for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning, particularly cadmium toxicity. Its chemical name is N-(2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxyhexyl) N-(sodium dithioformate)-sodium methionine. GMDTC acts by binding to heavy metals such as cadmium and platinum (from cisplatin), facilitating their removal from the body via renal excretion. It utilizes a sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) and glucose transporter type 2 (GLUT2) coupled transport mechanism in the kidney to expel cadmium efficiently. Preclinical studies have shown that GMDTC can significantly reduce cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and other systemic toxicities without compromising antitumor efficacy of cisplatin. The drug is being developed as an intravenous infusion for use as an antidote in cases of heavy metal poisoning[2][4][5][7].
