Overview

GMR CAR-T is an investigational chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy designed to target the alpha subunit of the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor (GMRα), also known as CD116. This receptor is highly expressed on the surface of various myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), while its expression on normal hematopoietic stem cells is relatively restricted. The therapy involves the ex vivo engineering of a patient's T cells to express a CAR that specifically recognizes CD116. Upon re-infusion, these engineered T cells identify and eliminate CD116-positive malignant cells. The development of this therapy has been spearheaded by researchers at Mie University and Nagoya University in Japan, with significant support and funding from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
