Overview

This intervention refers to a specific ovarian stimulation protocol evaluated by Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel for women undergoing IVF or ICSI. The protocol involves the administration of a GnRH antagonist (such as ganirelix or cetrorelix) for three consecutive days at the start of the menstrual cycle (days 2-4) to suppress endogenous gonadotropins before initiating standard ovarian stimulation with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (rFSH). GnRH antagonists work by competitively blocking the GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, preventing premature luteinizing hormone (LH) surges. Recombinant FSH is then used to stimulate the development of multiple ovarian follicles. This specific pretreatment approach aims to improve follicular synchrony and increase the number of oocytes retrieved in patients with various causes of infertility, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis.
