Overview

GNX-5086 is a potent small molecule inhibitor of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), developed by Congenia S.r.l. (a subsidiary of Genextra SpA). It is designed to mitigate cardiac reperfusion injury (RI) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). By inhibiting the mPTP, GNX-5086 increases the capacity of mitochondria to retain calcium, thereby protecting them from calcium overload and subsequent cell death during the restoration of blood flow. The drug has been evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial for safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers.
