Overview

Goji berry is the fruit of either *Lycium barbarum* or *Lycium chinense*, two closely related species in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Native to East Asia and widely cultivated in China (notably Ningxia and Xinjiang), goji berries have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and cuisine. They are rich in nutrients including vitamin C, vitamin A (as carotenoids like zeaxanthin), iron, fiber and protein. Traditionally believed to promote longevity and vitality (“tonic herb”), modern research suggests possible antioxidant effects as well as potential benefits for immune function and eye health due to their high antioxidant content. Animal studies indicate hepatoprotective effects (liver protection) possibly via antioxidant mechanisms; some evidence also points toward antidiabetic activity by lowering blood sugar levels. However clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited or low quality[1][3][4][5]. Goji berries may interact with certain medications metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes—especially warfarin—and may lower blood pressure or blood sugar[1][2][5]. Adverse reactions are rare but can include allergic responses.
