Gold-platinum nanoparticles (AuPt NPs) are novel nanoparticles synthesized with a gold core and a loose, branched outer platinum shell. These nanoparticles function as broad-spectrum antioxidants, primarily by scavenging excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). They exhibit multiple enzyme-like anti-oxidative properties, specifically possessing catalase-like and peroxidase-like activities. This mechanism allows them to reduce oxidative stress, protect cells, and alleviate kidney ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, AuPt NPs have shown potential in inhibiting the progression to chronic kidney disease by reducing kidney fibrosis in the long term, without obvious toxicity. They are being investigated as a therapeutic agent for kidney IRI management.
