GoLYTELY

GoLYTELY is a bowel preparation solution consisting of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350 and a balanced electrolyte mixture, including sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. It functions as an osmotic laxative by utilizing the high molecular weight PEG polymer to retain water within the intestinal lumen through osmotic pressure. This increases intraluminal volume and stimulates colonic motility, resulting in a watery stool that effectively cleanses the bowel. The inclusion of electrolytes is designed to minimize clinically significant shifts in fluid and electrolyte balance during the cleansing process. In the context of clinical research at Temple University, GoLYTELY was utilized as the standard-of-care comparator in a randomized trial evaluating the efficacy and patient tolerability of a Miralax (PEG 3350) and Gatorade regimen for adults undergoing screening colonoscopy for colorectal cancer detection. It is not a therapeutic agent for cancer but a diagnostic aid used to ensure adequate visualization of the colonic mucosa.
