Overview
Goreisan is a traditional Japanese Kampo medicine composed of five herbal ingredients: Alismatis Rhizoma, Polyporus, Poria, Atractylodis Lanceae Rhizoma, and Cinnamomi Cortex. It is primarily used to treat conditions associated with "water stagnation" (suidoku), such as edema, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. The drug's mechanism of action involves the regulation of water metabolism through the modulation of aquaporin (AQP) water channels, specifically AQP3, AQP4, and AQP5. By inhibiting these channels, Goreisan helps maintain osmotic balance and reduce fluid accumulation without causing significant electrolyte imbalances. It is widely prescribed in Japan and is currently being investigated for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and the management of chronic subdural hematoma.
