Overview

Gossypolone is a natural polyphenolic derivative of gossypol, structurally characterized as a binaphthalene compound primarily isolated from cottonseed. It belongs to the class of phytochemicals known as bissesquiterpenes and is considered a metabolite or degradation product of gossypol[1][2]. Like other gossypol derivatives, gossypolone is under investigation for potential antineoplastic properties, with proposed mechanisms that include induction of apoptosis in cancer cells by inhibition of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, as well as affecting cell signaling pathways and generating reactive oxygen species[1]. Research has also investigated the potential for gossypolone and related compounds as multitarget anticancer agents, but development status and pharmacological application of gossypolone itself in human disease are not well established.
