Overview

Gou Teng is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine derived from the dried hooks and stems of Uncaria rhynchophylla and related Uncaria species. It is primarily recognized for its neuroprotective, antihypertensive, and anticonvulsant properties. The pharmacological activity of Gou Teng is largely attributed to its indole alkaloids, specifically rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline, which act as calcium channel blockers and modulators of neurotransmission. Clinically, it is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat symptoms associated with 'Liver Yang' hyperactivity, such as hypertension, dizziness, and tremors, and is a key component of formulas like Tian Ma Gou Teng Decoction and Gou Teng San. Recent research has investigated its potential in treating Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders due to its ability to scavenging free radicals and inhibit apoptotic cascades.
