Overview

Gou-Teng-San (GTS), also known as Choto-san in Kampo medicine, is a traditional East Asian herbal formula primarily used for the treatment of headaches, hypertension, and dizziness. The formula is composed of multiple herbs, with *Uncaria rhynchophylla* (Gou Teng) serving as the principal component. GTS contains various bioactive indole alkaloids, such as rhynchophylline and hirsutine, which are thought to exert neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory effects. These actions are likely mediated through the modulation of neurotransmitter systems (including serotonin) and the blockade of voltage-gated calcium channels. In clinical research led by Dr. Chueh-Yi Tsai, GTS is being evaluated in a Phase 3 trial as a prophylactic treatment for episodic migraine to reduce attack frequency and improve patient quality of life.
