Overview

GP-119 is a small molecule metabolic activator developed by GliaPharm, a Swiss biotechnology company, to treat neurological disorders by addressing brain hypometabolism. The drug specifically targets astrocytes, the glial cells responsible for providing metabolic support to neurons, to stimulate glucose uptake and processing. By enhancing the astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle and overall brain energy supply, GP-119 aims to preserve neuronal function and survival. Its primary development focus is GLUT1 Deficiency Syndrome (GLUT1-DS), an orphan disease where glucose transport into the brain is impaired due to mutations in the SLC2A1 gene. Additionally, GliaPharm is collaborating with the Wyss Center to evaluate GP-119's potential in Alzheimer's disease, where glucose metabolism is significantly reduced in the early stages of the pathology.
