Overview

Recombinant gp120 protein is an experimental HIV-1 vaccine component developed and evaluated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). It consists of the 120 kDa surface subunit of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env), which is the primary protein responsible for viral attachment to host cells by binding to the CD4 receptor. In clinical trials, such as those evaluating the Ad4-HIV vaccine platform (including Ad4-EnvC150 and Ad4-mgag), this protein is frequently utilized as a 'boost' following a priming dose with viral vectors. The goal of the gp120 protein boost is to enhance the production of high-titer, neutralizing antibodies against the HIV-1 envelope, thereby providing protection against HIV-1 infection. This protein subunit approach is a key part of various prime-boost strategies evaluated by NIAID to elicit broad and durable immunity.
