Overview

GPX-002 is a gene therapy under development by Genprex for the treatment of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The therapy uses an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to deliver the Pdx1 and MafA genes directly into the pancreatic duct via endoscopy. These genes induce pancreatic alpha cells to transform into functional beta-like cells capable of producing insulin. In preclinical studies, this approach has restored normal blood glucose levels for extended periods in diabetic animal models. In Type 1 diabetes, these new beta-like cells may evade immune destruction due to their distinctness from native beta cells, while in Type 2 diabetes, the therapy aims to rejuvenate and replenish exhausted beta cell populations[1][2][3][5][6][8].
