GPX-003 is a preclinical gene therapy candidate being developed by Genprex for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. Licensed from the University of Pittsburgh, the therapy utilizes an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to deliver the transcription factors Pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (Pdx1) and MAF bZIP transcription factor A (MafA) under the control of an insulin promoter. The primary mechanism of action is the rejuvenation of exhausted pancreatic beta cells to restore endogenous insulin production. GPX-003 is currently undergoing preclinical evaluation in non-human primate (NHP) models to support its advancement toward clinical trials.
