GR24 is a synthetic analog of strigolactones, a class of plant hormones. It closely mimics the activity of natural strigolactones and is used in research to study plant-microbe interactions and plant development. GR24 has been shown to inhibit lateral shoot branching, stimulate the germination of Striga (witchweed) and Orobanche (broomrape) parasitic weed seeds, increase root-hair length, decrease the number of lateral roots in Arabidopsis, and promote symbiosis between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and plant roots[2][3][6]. In fungi, GR24 rapidly activates mitochondrial energy metabolism, increasing NADH content, NADH dehydrogenase activity, and ATP production, which supports hyphal branching and presymbiotic growth[1]. The effects on gene expression occur after prolonged exposure, with up-regulation of genes involved in mitochondrial metabolism, catabolism, and cell architecture after 5 days of treatment[1].
