Overview

Gramicidine C is a **cyclic peptide antibiotic** that consists of ten amino acid residues arranged in a cyclodecapeptide structure. It is naturally produced by *Brevibacillus brevis*, a soil bacterium[2][10]. Gramicidine C forms transmembrane channels in bacterial cell membranes, thereby increasing membrane permeability to monovalent cations. This disrupts normal ionic gradients and leads to cell death[4][6][8]. It is mainly active against **gram-positive bacteria** and is used in topical formulations for treating dermatological or ophthalmic infections. Gramicidine C is part of the gramicidin family, which includes analogues A, B, and D; however, gramicidine C features a key residue mutation (W11Y) that influences its ion transport properties but not its overall backbone conformation[6][8]. Due to systemic toxicity, it is not used internally but formulated in products for local use.
