GranuFlo

GranuFlo is a dry acid concentrate used in hemodialysis to neutralize excess acid in the blood of patients with acute renal failure or chronic kidney disease. Developed by Fresenius Medical Care, it is a powdered formulation containing acetic acid and sodium acetate (which converts to bicarbonate). It is diluted with purified water and combined with sodium bicarbonate during the dialysis process. The product gained notoriety due to a 2012 FDA Class I recall after it was linked to an increased risk of metabolic alkalosis and sudden cardiac arrest, as the sodium acetate component provided more total buffer than physicians were often aware of, leading to dangerous elevations in serum bicarbonate levels.
