Overview

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) plus plerixafor is a combination therapy used to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the peripheral blood for collection and subsequent autologous transplantation. G-CSF is a growth factor that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. Plerixafor is a small molecule antagonist of the chemokine receptor CXCR4; it blocks the interaction between CXCR4 on hematopoietic stem cells and its ligand stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α), disrupting retention signals in the bone marrow and increasing circulating CD34+ stem cells. This combination is primarily indicated for patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma or multiple myeloma who are undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation and have poor mobilization with G-CSF alone[1][2][3][5][8]. Developed by Genzyme/Sanofi.
