This is a combination therapy consisting of a granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and the corticosteroid prednisone. G-CSFs are biologic agents that stimulate the bone marrow to produce neutrophils, thereby reducing the risk of infection in patients with neutropenia or those undergoing chemotherapy. Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by activating glucocorticoid receptors. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects in conditions such as severe congenital neutropenia unresponsive to G-CSF alone, where it can enhance STAT5 activation and improve neutrophil counts[1]. It has also shown benefit as an add-on therapy in severe alcoholic hepatitis when combined with prednisolone (a related corticosteroid), improving short-term survival compared to monotherapy[6]. The two drugs mobilize different populations of neutrophils; G-CSF mobilizes both mature and immature forms, while prednisone primarily mobilizes mature neutrophils[8].
