Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell (including neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) used as a transfusion therapy to provide immediate innate immune support. In the specific research context led by the University of Manchester, granulocyte transfusions are being evaluated as a supportive therapy for pediatric patients with high-risk acute leukemia undergoing umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT).
