Overview

Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell (including neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) used as a transfusion therapy to provide immediate innate immune support. In the specific research context led by the University of Manchester, granulocyte transfusions are being evaluated as a supportive therapy for pediatric patients with high-risk acute leukemia undergoing umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT). The primary objective of this intervention is to stimulate the expansion and reconstitution of donor-derived immune cells from the cord blood graft. By providing an immunological stimulus, these transfusions aim to accelerate immune recovery and reduce the risk of post-transplant infections without increasing the incidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
