Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Grape pomace extract (GPE) is a polyphenol-rich botanical extract derived from the skins, seeds, and stalks of grapes (*Vitis vinifera*), which are byproducts of the winemaking industry. It contains a complex profile of bioactive compounds, including anthocyanins (notably malvidin-3-O-glucoside), flavonoids (such as quercetin, catechin, and epicatechin), stilbenes, and phenolic acids. GPE is being investigated for its diverse therapeutic potential, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, and cardioprotective properties. Mechanistically, it has been shown to modulate gut microbiota, improve intestinal barrier integrity, inhibit carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, and reduce hyperpolarization-activated current (If) density in cardiomyocytes. Clinical and preclinical research explores its utility in managing obesity-related metabolic disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
