Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Grape seed and skin extract is a dietary supplement derived from the seeds and skins of the grape plant (Vitis vinifera). It is rich in antioxidants—particularly oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), phenolic acids, flavonoids such as catechin and epicatechin, anthocyanins, gallic acid—and other polyphenols. The primary mechanism of action is attributed to its potent antioxidant activity. This includes scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress by increasing endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities (such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) and activating cellular defense pathways like Nrf2/ARE[2][4]. Grape seed and skin extracts have been studied for potential benefits in cardiovascular health (improving blood flow/circulation; lowering blood pressure; protecting blood vessels), wound healing promotion[3][9], anti-inflammatory effects[4], possible anticancer properties[4], reduction of edema/venous insufficiency symptoms[1][6], support for eye health/macular degeneration[1][6], bone strength maintenance[3], neuroprotection/brain health support via phenolic compounds[8]. However, most clinical evidence remains preliminary or inconclusive. The product is available in oral forms such as capsules or tablets.
