Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Grape seed extract is an industrial derivative of the seeds of *Vitis vinifera* (wine grapes). It is rich in polyphenolic compounds known as proanthocyanidins and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes. These compounds are potent antioxidants and may have anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects. Grape seed extract has been studied for its potential to improve blood circulation (chronic venous insufficiency), lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce diastolic blood pressure, support wound healing when applied topically or used in oral care products to prevent tooth decay. Other suggested uses include prevention or adjunct treatment for atherosclerosis, macular degeneration, peripheral vascular disease, endometriosis symptoms relief (based on limited clinical evidence), cancer prevention support (unproven), eye strain reduction and collagen breakdown prevention. The mechanism of action is primarily attributed to antioxidant activity—neutralizing free radicals—and inhibition of collagen breakdown in blood vessels[1][3][4][5][9].
