Overview

Grape seed extract (GSE) hydrogel is an experimental intracanal medication being evaluated for regenerative endodontic procedures, specifically the revascularization of necrotic permanent immature teeth in children. Developed by researchers at Al-Azhar University, this formulation utilizes a 6.5% concentration of grape seed extract, which is rich in proanthocyanidins. These polyphenolic compounds function as potent antioxidants and natural cross-linkers of dentin collagen, which helps stabilize the collagen matrix and improve the mechanical properties of the root canal walls. Additionally, GSE exhibits antimicrobial properties that assist in disinfecting the canal space, creating a favorable environment for the ingrowth of new vital tissue (revascularization) in teeth with pulp necrosis.
